Reasons to Love this Recipe
- Easy – Simple ingredients, no-bake and easy to prepare.
- Healthier – A healthier alternative to many frozen treats.
- Fun – A great recipe for kids to help with.
Ingredients Information (and Alternative Suggestions)
- Banana: Use ripe bananas—ripe enough to provide plenty of natural sweetness but not too ripe that they are mushy and don't form good slices. Look for bananas with some brown spots for the best results.
- Peanut Butter: I use natural peanut butter because it's easy to pour and spread into a layer. If you use a thicker brand, you may need to microwave it briefly to make it more liquidy. You can also swap it for your favourite nut butter, such as almond butter or cashew butter. And for a nut-free option, you could use sunflower seed butter.
- Dark Chocolate Chips: Dark chocolate complements the sweetness of the banana, but you can substitute with milk chocolate or even a mix of both, depending on your taste.
- Coconut Oil: Helps the chocolate melt smoothly and makes it easier to spread over the peanut butter layer.

Step by Step Instructions (with Images)
- Line a baking sheet, that fits in your freezer, with parchment paper. Arrange the sliced bananas in rows, forming a rectangular shape. Place another sheet of parchment paper on top and gently press down with a cup or glass to flatten the banana slices slightly.
- Spread a layer of peanut butter over the layer of bananas. Transfer the tray to the freezer for about 20 minutes to firm up the bananas and peanut butter.
- Combine chocolate chips and coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl, and microwave in 15 -30 second intervals, stirring after each round, until fully melted.
- Once the peanut butter layer has set, drizzle the melted chocolate and spread it into an even layer. Pop the tray back into the freezer for a couple of hours until everything is fully hardened.
Top tips
- For extra crunch and flavour, try sprinkling the chocolate layer with chopped peanuts, coconut flakes, or almond slices.
- A sprinkle of flaky sea salt is a fantastic way to enhance the chocolate’s flavour naturally.
- If you do not like using a microwave you can melt the chocolate chips using the double boiler method instead.
- This frozen treat is best enjoyed straight from the freezer. The bananas will defrost and become soggy if left at room temperature for too long.
Storage
- Store any leftover banana bark in an airtight container in the freezer, for up to a month.
Recipe FAQs
I wouldn’t recommend this recipe for babies due to the chocolate layer and potential choking hazard.
However, frozen bananas can be great for soothing teething pain. Try blending frozen banana slices into a creamy treat like healthy banana ice cream. You could also make frozen popsicles from banana purée or use small pieces of frozen banana in a mesh feeder.
