Sliced avocado, coated in breadcrumbs and cooked until crispy. These Baked Avocado Fries are easy to make, taste delicious and are perfect for the whole family.
A Great Family Finger Food
- Baby - I first made these fries when my youngest was around 6 or 7 months. He struggled to pick up pieces of avocado and even though I tried presenting it in different ways, (using a crinkle cutter and leaving the skin on), he still found it too slippery. He had no issues with these fries though - the crumb provides good grip.
- Child - Although I first made these to give to my baby, my eldest LOVED them! He was four at the time. I recently re-shot the photos for this post and both boys still love them (now age 7 & 4). Kids really do love finger foods, especially if they come with a dip!
- Adult - Soft in the centre and crispy on the outside these fries are certainly addictive. I love them seasoned well and served with a creamy sriracha dip.
How To Make Avocado Fries
Avocado fries are so simple to make and they are a great recipe for getting the kids involved. My kids love recipes that involve coating (like these coconut chicken tenders, fish goujons or these parmesan chicken strips). Although it can get messy, it is a great task for kids and it is good to get them involved).
- Start by halving an avocado, remove the stone and then slice each half lengthways, just to the skin, to form "fries". Use a large spoon to gently scoop out the slices. Alternately, you can peel back the skin of the avocado if you find that this would be easier.
- To coat the avocado start by rolling each slice in the flour.
- Then dip into the beaten egg.
- Finally, roll in the breadcrumbs.
Place each coated slice on a baking tray and lightly spray with olive oil. Bake for approx. 15-20 mins at 200C / 400F.
Top Tips
- Choosing an Avocado - You want to use lovely ripe avocados for this recipe. To check if your avocado is ripe, place it in the palm of your hand and gently squeeze without applying your fingertips (as this can cause bruising.) Ripe, ready to eat avocados will feel lightly soft but will not feel “mushy” to the touch.
- Add some Flavour - I have kept the coating very plain and add flavour through dips. Want to boost the flavour? Try seasoning the flour and/or breadcrumbs with a little garlic powder, chilli powder, smoked paprika or Cajun seasoning.
- Breadcrumbs - You can use any breadcrumbs, I believe panko breadcrumbs produce the best result and I love the extra crush they provide.
- Want a Darker Coating? - As this finger food is baked, and not fried, the coating isn't that dark golden brown colour that frying produces. If you have the extra time, you can pre-bake the breadcrumbs, before coating the avocado, to make them beautiful and golden. (I have explained this more (with visuals) in this Salmon Croquette recipe)
Serving Suggestions
You can certainly eat these fries plain, and I'm sure babies will be more than happy with that option, however, if you have two minutes then you should really whip up a yummy dip (or dips) to serve with them.
Pictured, I have served the fries with a Smoked Paprika Dip. This is my go-to dip as it takes seconds to prepare and my kids love it.
I also love these fries with a Creamy Lime Dip or a Lime and Coriander (cilantro) Dip. Use the same measurements as the smoked paprika dip but miss out the smoked paprika and add more lime (to taste) and some freshly chopped coriander (cilantro).
For the adults who love a lot of spice - try adding some Sriracha to your lime dip (to taste) to make a delicious Creamy Sriracha Dip.

Rozsa
Can you make them up and freeze any extra ready to bake for another day?
Amy
Hi Rozsa, these don't keep well unfortunatley. They are best eaten straight away
Mel
Can these be frozen?
Tashyla Peevy
By chance, do you know if there is a substitute for the eggs?
Amy
Hi Tashyla, I haven't actually tried an egg substitute with this recipe. You could try olive oil, yoghurt or melted butter. It is just used to get the breadcrumbs to stick 🙂
